What is England Day 2027?
England Day 2027 is a proposed national celebration of England’s 1,100th anniversary on Monday 12 July 2027.
England’s 1,100th anniversary refers to the year 927, when King Æthelstan established rule over the major kingdoms of Anglo-Saxon England and is conventionally recognised as the first king of a unified England.
The anniversary therefore runs from 927 to 2027. Englandism uses the term England Day for the commemoration of this anniversary and advocates for a national celebration of England’s history and civic identity with an official bank holiday.
England Day Countdown
With or without an official bank holiday Monday on 12th July 2027, we’re celebrating England Day on the weekend of 10th-12th July 2027.

English Flags & Symbols
Which flag should I be flying and am I allowed to fly English flags? Here’s our historical guide to the evolution of English flags and symbols from the Wessex wyvern to the Cross of St George.
Origins: English Flags & Symbols
Legally, without planning permission and within limits, you are allowed to display the Cross of St George and/or the modern Union Flag on your property. All of the older, historic flags, require planning consent as they are not recognised as national or regional flags with the arguable exception of Wessex. Angela Rayner will deciding which new English regions we all live in during 2027, making traditional county flags obsolete.
There might just be a popular vote for new flags for the All New England? I’m voting Flaggy McFlagface but we’ll probably just get given Rayner’s Victorious Regina and Burnham’s Stunning Bunting.
The Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of Wessex, Mercia, Northumbria, East Anglia, Essex, Kent and Sussex. The Heptarchy of the seven kingdoms. Note: The Cross of St George was first used by English forces as documented from 1277. It had previously been associated with Christian forces during Crusades and was permanently established as England’s national emblem during 14th–15th centuries.
Oyez, oyez, oyez!
England Day 2027 on 12th July, by no prior arrangement, is officially International Town Criers Day – so dust off your tricorn and polish your bell:
Not a lot of people know that the Countenance Divine shined forth upon our clouded hills. And lo, it was ordained thus, that Town Criers across the land shalt proclaim the Word of England, for as it is written on A4 printout.
That England on her 401,767th day (1100 years), is indeed, the fully builded Jerusalem against the envy of less happier lands such as France.
We are endeavouring to encourage the Ancient & Honourable Guild of Town Criers, to do some proclaiming on July 12th. However, according to Wiki, July 12th is also Paper Bag Day, Etch A Sketch Day and heterochromia Different Coloured Eyes Day so they might be busy. NOTE: ‘eyes pointing in different directions day’ is only partly observed in Scotland.
Celebrating England Day 12th July 927-2027
Commemorating the 1100th anniversary of the unification of England under one English king. But why is the British Government opposed to a bank holiday on Monday 12th July 2027?
“The current pattern of bank and public holidays is well established and the Government has no plans to create a one-off bank holiday to mark the 1100th anniversary of the unification of England under King Athelstan.”

The Government’s 10 Arguments Against an England 1100 Bank Holiday — Examined: What arguments could the UK Government use against a bank holiday for England’s 1,100th anniversary — and are there contradictions in its position?
Scotland Yes, England No?
On Monday 15th June 2026, Scotland officially awarded itself an additional, one-off, bank holiday. What momentous and nation defining moment was this unprecedented proclamation by Charles III organised to celebrate?
Given that England has been refused this option for the celebration of its foundation and 1,100 years of national continuity, what possibly could be so epoch-defining as to justify Scotland’s, ‘special’ Scotland Day?
The British Government reserves the grant of public holidays for ‘proper important things’ usually involving the monarchy and major national milestones such as Platinum Jubilees. Which is why over a millennium of English history doesn’t quite cut the Colman’s English Mustard…
The Scottish Benchmark? The men’s football team qualified for the FIFA World Cup for the first time since 1998. Lest the beacons alight across the realm.

ANDREW ROSINDELL MP | REFORM UK |
Reform UK: Andrew Rosindell MP
Position: Direct parliamentary support for a 12 July 2027 public holiday
Andrew Rosindell MP has made one of the clearest parliamentary interventions in support of the specific England Day proposal. In a written parliamentary question he asked the Government to make 12 July 2027 a public holiday to mark the 1,100th anniversary of the unification of England under King Æthelstan.
Rosindell also signed the parliamentary Early Day Motion “Birth of England in Westmorland in 927”, which celebrates the birth of England in 927, recognises the historical significance of Eamont Bridge and Brougham, and welcomes the work of England’s 1100th project.
England Day position: Direct parliamentary support for the proposed 12 July 2027 public holiday and documented support for recognition of England’s birth in 927.

TIM FARRON MP | LIBERAL DEMOCRAT |
Liberal Democrats: Tim Farron MP
Position: Direct support for recognition of England’s birth in 927
Tim Farron MP tabled the parliamentary Early Day Motion “Birth of England in Westmorland in 927”. The motion explicitly celebrates the birth of England in 927 and recognises the historical significance of Eamont Bridge and Brougham, where King Æthelstan brought together significant rulers from across the British Isles.
The motion also welcomes the work of the England’s 1100th project and the local community preserving this part of England’s national story.
England Day position: Direct support for parliamentary recognition of 927, Eamont Bridge and England’s 1,100th anniversary. The motion does not itself endorse the proposed bank holiday on Monday 12 July 2027.
- Liberal Democrat 60%
ALEX BURGHART MP | CONSERVATIVE |
Conservative: Alex Burghart MP
Position: Direct involvement in England 1100 commemoration
Alex Burghart MP has a direct connection with efforts to secure greater recognition for King Æthelstan and England’s formation. The University of Cambridge records that the group promoting greater recognition of Æthelstan and the 1,100th anniversary was convened by Alex Burghart MP.
His involvement therefore goes beyond general political interest in the anniversary and places him among those actively involved in preparations for greater recognition of England’s 1,100th anniversary.
England Day position: Direct involvement with England 1100. Englandism has not identified a public statement from Alex Burghart specifically endorsing a one-off bank holiday on Monday 12 July 2027.
- Conservative 55%
LUKE MYER MP | LABOUR |
Labour: Luke Myer MP
Position: Direct support for commemorating England’s 1,100th anniversary
Luke Myer MP tabled the parliamentary Early Day Motion “1,100 years since the political unification of England”. It notes that 2027 marks 1,100 years since 927, when King Æthelstan took control of York and brought Northumbria into the first politically united English kingdom.
The motion calls for the anniversary to be marked with pride in England’s history, culture and common inheritance and states that English identity is strongest when it is “open, rooted, confident and generous”. It calls on schools, museums, heritage bodies and civic institutions to commemorate the anniversary.
England Day position: Direct support for national commemoration of England 1100. Englandism has not identified a public endorsement from Luke Myer of the specific proposal for a bank holiday on Monday 12 July 2027.
- Labour 60%
ZACK POLANSKI (NOT MP) | GREEN |
Green Party: No direct parliamentary endorsement identified
Position: Related interest in inclusive English identity, but no direct England Day endorsement identified
Englandism has not yet identified a sitting Green MP who has formally supported the parliamentary motions concerning England’s 1,100th anniversary, 927 or the proposed England Day bank holiday on 12 July 2027.
Former Green Party MP and leader Caroline Lucas has, however, been associated with A Very English Chat, an initiative encouraging a broader and more inclusive public discussion about English identity. This is relevant to the civic English identity debate, but should not be presented as support for England Day 2027.
England Day position: No direct Green parliamentary endorsement identified to date. This section will be updated if a Green MP makes a public statement or takes parliamentary action concerning England 1100 or England Day 2027.

England Day: Are there too many bank holidays already?
Yes, if you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland. Like most things, the British Government gives you more, like St Andrew’s Day and St Patrick’s Day. So why not level up with England Day 2027?
The British Government has consistently refused to celebrate St George’s Day on April 23rd, which is also William Shakespeare’s birth (and death) day. Andy Burnham owes England one for Scotland and two for Northern Ireland. So how about a one off, day off? England Day 2027.
England Day: It’s too expensive to mention England…
It’s much cheaper for England to gift extra funding, per head, for the citizens of anywhere else but England.
Except if you live in London where you’ll receive 13% more than the UK average, per person, for living near Westminster. But, as Horatio Nelson pointed out: “England expects that every man will do his duty” and have a large lady in a blue dress next to his column.
England: per capita funding deficit
England has consistently the lowest UK Government spending allocation.
Would England Day 2027 cause offence?

As England approaches the 1,100th anniversary of its unification, could a national bank holiday on Monday 12 July 2027 cause offence elsewhere in the United Kingdom? And should the differing histories and national identities of the UK’s four nations influence how England commemorates its own foundation? And Cornwall.
